Coastline
The Buchan coast offers unspoilt beaches such as Rattray & Cruden Bay, cliff top walks and perched precariously on the rocks a few miles south are the dramatic ruins of Slains Castle, which are said to have inspired Bram Stoker’s story of Dracula. There is also sailing at Peterhead marina and the museum at Fraserburgh lighthouse is well worth a visit. The coastline is also sprinkled with a number of picturesque fishing villages such as Collieston, and Pennan – where in 1983, parts of the film Local Hero were shot. More information is available at www.egcp.org.uk
Walking and Cycling
In addition to the beach and cliff-top walks, the former Buchan railway line passes about 500 yards from the cottage and provides an extensive network throughout the county. It is also ideal for cycling, and quiet country roads and forest trails add to the options available to cyclists. See www.cyclegrampian.co.uk
Shooting & Fishing
There is fishing locally on the river Ugie nearby & shooting can also be arranged. The world famous Dee, Don and Deveron (where the record for the heaviest fly caught salmon still stands) are not too far away either.
Historic Houses & Castles
The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland manage a number of historic properties and gardens in the area, such as Haddo House, Craigievar Dunnottar and Crathes Castles and Pitmedden Gardens. See www.nationaltrust.org.uk and historic-scotland.gov.uk
Birdwatching/ Ornithology
RSPB reserves at Strathbeg loch and the Newburgh estuary are very popular with the largest influx of Pink-footed Geese in the UK. Newburgh is also excellent for seal watching and dolphins make the occasional appearance too. Troup Head is perhaps the highlight of the seabird nest sites, although the Bullers of Buchan are quite spectacular too. See www.rspb.org.uk
Wet weather attractions
A recent must-see attraction is the former Peterhead Prison Museum, where you can get a taste of what life behind bars used to be like. Duff House at Banff has been restored to its former glory and is now an outpost of the Scottish National Gallery with revolving exhibitions. Neighbouring Macduff is host to an aquarium where children are encouraged to get hands on with some of the exhibits. There are several soft-play centres for younger children such as MACBI in Mintlaw or Loopty Lous in Boddam. Older children might prefer the Lochter activity centre by Oldmeldrum where archery, go-karting, fishing, clay pigeon shooting etc provide for an action packed day.
Family History
Many of our visitors are here to trace their forebears and there are excellent resources in Peterhead and Aberdeen. See Aberdeen and North East Scotland Family History Society and Aberdeenshire Council
Whisky
A distillery visit to Glengarioch at Oldmeldrum is not far from Berrryhill , however, if you have a particular taste for the "water of life" there are many others heading towards Speyside. See www.maltwhiskytrail.com
